“Wednesday” debuted today.
The main protagonist “Wednesday Addams” is played by Jenna Ortega. “The Addams Family” has been around since the 1930s, and now, nearly 100 years later, are set to attract a previous era of fans, as well as, a new generation of fans.
Tim Burton directs the show and is one of the show’s executive producers.
“The Addams Family” first appeared in a series of single-panel cartoons in “The New Yorker” in 1938 created by Charles Addams.
Since that time, “The Addams Family” has appeared on different media throughout the years. The theme song, with the iconic snapping of the fingers, is prevalent in pop culture, being very popular around Halloween, as well as, also being played in sporting events, such as Brooklyn Nets games.
Gomez and Morticia are the parents to Wednesday and Pugsley. Other family members include the butler Lurch, Cousin Itt, Uncle Fester and Thing, which is a hand.
Notable appearances of “The Addams Family” include the 1964 white and black sitcom, “The Addams Family,” the 1990’s live-action films “The Addams Family,” “Addams Family Value,” and “Addams Family Reunion.” There was also the 2019 and 2021 animated films “The Addams Family” and “The Addams Family 2.”
Tim Burton is a legendary director known for movies such as “Beetlejuice,” 1989’s “The Batman,” “Edward Scissorhands,” “Batman Returns,” “The Nightmare Before Christmas,” and “Corpse Bride.”
Burton was initially approached to direct the 1991 “The Addams Family,” but had to turn the role down due to filming “Batman Returns.”
Burton has said that the character “Wednesday Addams” is probably someone he would have dated in high school.
Ortega has said that growing up she was always compared to “Wednesday Addams.” Once it was announced Ortega was playing the lead in “Wednesday,” there were viral clips of her on social media from her Disney channel show “Stuck in the Middle.”
On the Disney show, Ortega’s character, Harley, expresses that being the middle child she feels overlooked, if she were a day of the week, it would be Wednesday.
We were able to attend the “Wednesday” panel at this year’s New York Comic Con.
It was revealed in a new trailer that Christina Ricci, who may have the most iconic Wednesday Addams portrayals, was revealed to be an upcoming new character on “Wednesday.” It was also revealed that Uncle Fester would be in the upcoming series portrayed by Fred Armisen.

The cast spoke excitedly about how much work and love was put into crafting this show. Ortega also spoke about her own spin of the Wednesday Addams character.
Wednesday Addams is Latina, and this would be the first time she is being portrayed by someone that is also Latina.
The new series is now streaming on Netflix and has eight episodes with a runtime of 45 minutes each.
