‘Don’t Let Them Push Us Out’: Jersey City Petition Circulating For Affordable Housing
The Friends of Affordable Housing are calling on community members to stand up and speak out.
A 1,517 unit complex was recently approved for 548-555 Summit Avenue in the Journal Square neighborhood, backed by developer Homestead Market.
According to the Friends of Affordable Housing post, there is only 10% set aside for affordable housing, and they’re all rentals.
“More rental blocks mean more corporate profit, more gentrification, and ZERO ways for families to build equity or plant permanent roots in JSQ. We don’t need more luxury rent traps. We need real, wealth-building homeownership opportunities!” the petition read.
“… Don’t let them push us out. We need a massive public outcry to show local leaders we mean business.”

This Historic Church Is Turning Into Jersey City Apartments
St. Lucy’s Roman Catholic Church, located at 615 Grove Street, will reportedly have portions of its historic structure preserved, but will now have major add-ons including a 24-story glass tower with 444 apartments.
The church, which closed in 1985, will keep its front doors as the main entrance as visitors will reportedly be greeted by a 145-foot bell tower in the lobby.
“We’re paying homage to the church and rectory,” Victor Cividini, executive vice president of residential construction at SJP Properties, told NJ.com.
“It’s different from a development standpoint. It’s responsible. You’re preserving the historic elements and you’re … bridging that gap with the new generation of housing.”
It will have:
- 431 market-rate rentals consisting of studios, one-bedroom, one-bedroom-with-a-den and two-bedroom units
- 13 “affordable” one-bedroom, one-bedroom-with-a-den and three-bedroom apartments
Construction started in September 2025 and is expected to be complete by the third quarter of 2028.
Hudson County’s New Mental Health Diversion Program Is Open For Applicants
The Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office is accepting applications for a new program that’s looking to help individuals divert from incarceration.
The Mental Health Diversion Program (MHDP) is designed to redirect individuals accused of certain crimes into community-based treatment programs.
In order to participate, people facing certain charges must submit an application with the HCPO stating they “suffer” from a mental health condition. The application will be reviewed by a member of the Prosecutor’s Office and a mental health professional, who will determine eligibility.
Individuals accepted will receive counseling, referrals and other individualized treatment plans that aim to “deter” further criminal actions.
Hudson County Prosecutor Wayne Mello spoke about the new program stating, “Promoting public safety is at the forefront of what we do at the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office, and we cannot fully deter crime if we are not addressing the very issues that lead an individual to offend.”
The MHDP was created with grant funding from the New Jersey Office of the Attorney General.
