Every year, Latinos throughout Mexico and Central America come together for a celebratory event honoring the birth of Jesus known as Las Posadas.
Similar to a typical Christmas celebration, this holiday embodies togetherness with friends, family and loved ones and what better way to celebrate than with a feast of delicious food? This special celebration takes place for nine days signifying the nine months Jesus was in his mother’s belly.
During these days, there are a variety of events and huge feasts. Buñuelos are a traditional dish on the menu during this time and offers a light, crispy and sweet flavor perfect for Christmas time.
This simple recipe consists of a simple dough that is turned into thin, disk-shaped pieces, shallow fried and coated with a light layer of cinnamon sugar.
To add an extra touch of sweetness, the buñuelos can also be topped with piloncillo, a sweet caramel like sauce made with sugar cane.
If you’d like to join in on the celebrations this year, follow the recipe below!
Recipe
- In a medium bowl, add the flour, baking powder, sugar and salt. Mix thoroughly.
- Create a well in the middle and add the egg, vanilla extract and melted butter. Mix until it forms a grainy texture.
- Add the water slowly, kneading for about 5 minutes or until the dough is smooth.
- Cover with a towel and let rest for 30 minutes.
- When the dough is ready, separate into 12 equal sized balls.
- Add flour to your surface and begin rolling into thin circles. The buñuelo should be transparent, but should not tear.
- Add neutral frying oil to a pan over medium heat.
- When the oil is ready, add the buñuelo, one at a time and fry until golden brown, about 2-3 minutes per side.
- After each buñuelo comes out, coat with the sugar immediately, shaking off any excess and set aside.
- Repeat with remaining dough.
- Top with piloncillo, if using or simply serve and enjoy!
