Get World Cup Ready In Hudson County’s ‘Soccer Town’
The Town of Kearny announced that they are celebrating their 250th anniversary with watch parties for the 2026 World Cup games, among other activities.
The town will have watch parties the following days at Veterans Field on Belgrove Drive:
- Friday, June 19 at 3 p.m. – USA vs. Australia
- Wednesday, June 24 at 6 p.m. – Scotland vs. Brazil
- Friday, June 26 at 8 p.m. – Spain vs. Uruguay
Kearny is dubbed at the U.S.’s “soccer town” because of its roots that stretch back to the 1870s. Scottish immigrants landed in Kearny where they joined company teams and formed clubs playing soccer.

This new approach to the sport got its name from a term derived by pulling “soc,” according to the Gothamist. In 1885, a U.S. national team played its first international match at what is now the parking lot for Hudson County’s belovedTops Diner, which is on the border of Kearny and East Newark.
