“Scream” debuted in December 1996, and became the highest-grossing slasher film of all-time, until “Halloween”(2018) passed it.
The success of the original film led to four additional movies being released, as well as a spin-off television series. The success of “Scream”(2022) has led to “Scream 6” being greenlit and will release in March 2023.
The character, Ghostface, is a pop culture icon, being one of the more popular Halloween costumes of the late 90’s/early 2000s.
Different variations of the Ghostface mask also exist, including comical versions. The Wayans Bros. parody movie “Scary Movie” featured the Ghostface character not only killing, but also being involved in many comedic scenes, maybe the most iconic being the “What’s up!” scene, which was parodying a popular Budweiser commercial.
The main stars of the franchise are Neve Campbell, Courteny Cox and David Arquette, who played Sidney Prescott, Gale Weathers and Dewey Riley.
The three have appeared in all of the films thus far.

The “Scream” franchise was unique because it would acknowledge the cliches of a movie, while also giving out rules to follow to avoid dying.
There would also be a film, within a film, “Stab” are movies that are inspired by the events that happen in “Scream.”
Ghostface has been played by multiple actors throughout the franchise’s history, sometimes multiple Ghostfaces appear within the same movie.
Viewers of “Scream” always have that added bonus of trying to figure out who the killer is within the movie, as well as who is going to die.
“Scream” has found plenty of success at the MTV Movie Awards. “Scream” won “Best Movie” at the 1997 MTV Movie Awards. Campbell won “Best Female Performance” for “Scream 2” at the 1998 MTV Movie Awards. Franchise newcomer Ortega won “Most Frightened Performance” at the 2022 MTV Movie & TV Awards.
