Accra also referred to as Akra, is a malanga fritter filled with few ingredients including green onions, parsley, scotch bonnet peppers and more that create a filling and flavorful snack with a hint of spice.
The recipe originated in West Africa and was later brought to Haiti during the slave trade.
Since, it has become a staple food in Haiti, and is usually served as an appetizer or can be made alongside fish as a side dish.
Fun fact: It’s typically sold as street food.
Although there are not many restaurants in the Hudson County area that serve this dish, the recipe only require a few easy steps, making it easy to make at home.

Recipe:
- In a blender add all the ingredients and puree into a smooth consistency.
- Pour mix into a mixing bowl and refrigerate for about 30 minutes to allow flavors to blend.
- Preheat oil in a frying pan or deep fryer to 350 degrees.
- Place small amounts of the mix into the oil using a cookie dough scoop or a spoon.
- Fry the accra for 5-8 min or until golden brown.
- Remove from fryer and place on napkin to remove excess oil. Serve warm.
