On June 19, 2025, the world came crashing down on Christian and Chris Escudero.
A small fire in the back of their Legal Grounds Coffee shop left a big impact and forced them to shut down their then 21-year-old family business, which meant they couldn’t work, which meant all of their means of livelihood stopped. They had to switch gears, fight insurance and do a lot of the renovations themselves, and despite everything, they said they still wanted to come back for the community.
“We thought it was the end of the world,” Christian told Slice of Culture.
“… It was a tough time, but it ended up being a blessing in disguise because it gave us the funds and the time needed to really just make the space nice again and make it new again, and put some new life and energy back into it.”
Now called “Legal,” the 170 Grand Street location is fully renovated, and is open seven days a week from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. They’re encouraging everyone to “try the best breakfast you’ve ever had.”
Christian has taken on the role as owner/operator and continues to work side-by-side with his father, Chris, who assists in everything from chef, barista and more.

How The Community Saved Them
Legal has been in the Downtown Jersey City area since 2004, sitting right across from St. Peter’s Prep and around the corner from The OLC School (Our Lady of Czestochowa). It can be easy to miss if you’re not looking for it, but the cafe’s loyal community has kept them going ever since.
And when their world stopped on June 19, 2025, the community pushed them forward.
“The community [was] completely there for us and saved us. We wouldn’t be here without them, absolutely,” Christian said.
“We had to [make a] GoFundMe… Insurance took a while, so the community’s what really got us through those first couple months when we had nothing. Just the outpouring of support, everyone wanting us to be back just really gave us all the motivation we needed to just put everything back into this place and get back open again.”

Chris added, “[The community] felt our pain and they helped me personally be able to get past this point so I could stay here and not move on to like Houston or out West, which is what I [might have done]… But quite frankly, we knew day one that we were going to rebuild and that this would be the homestead for us. I’m very glad that it’s worked out the way it has ’cause I couldn’t be prouder of my son.”
As a child, Christian slept in the windowfront of the cafe, then learned how to make lattes for customers as he grew up and now, he’s the official owner of Legal.
“It’s got old spirits in this building, so we feel very welcome and we feel like it’s a great neighborhood and it’s a great place…,” Chris, his father, said. “We really enjoy serving the neighborhood and they seem to appreciate it and as I get older, I recognize the value of that connection.”

Legal’s New Chapter
The design in the shop is different—the countertop a 100-year-old maple table with an overhead that’s made of antique doors stitched together, which is the work of interior designer Kevin Winston—but Christian and his father continue to welcome visitors with the same old smile.

After their soft opening in May, the duo unveiled their menu, which reflects all their customer favorites like breakfast foods and lunch, plus smoothies, protein shakes and coffee. You can still find items like their “daily specials” and the Xavier Mack.
Legal is also working on bringing back their monthly music events plus poetry and open mic nights where “all art is welcome.” They also want to do pop-ups at the shop, and invite anyone who makes food locally to utilize their 170 Grand Street location to serve it and try it out for a short-term basis.

Chris, or soon to-be-known as “C Major,” is working on a project and will be sharing details soon.
