A Pakistani Staple – Aloo Keema

Classic South Asian spices paired with affordable staple ingredients are all you need to create the vibrantly spiced and comforting dish known as Aloo Keema. 

Likely originating sometime in the early 18th or 19th century, this dish combines aromatic flavors like turmeric, cumin, coriander, garam masala and red chili with potatoes and minced meat making it a balanced and filling meal. 

This recipe is known for its use of everyday items that make it affordable and easy to feed a family and is prepared in most Pakistani households as a typical dinner. 

The preparation of this dish can vary in levels of spice. Some families even add peas to add a touch of brightness and balance the chili. It is traditionally served family style alongside basmati rice and naan.

Recipe 

  1. In a pan over medium heat, add oil. Once hot, add the onions and cook until golden, about 5-7 minutes. 
  2. Add the garlic and ginger and cook until fragrant, about 1-2 minutes. 
  3. Add the minced meat and cook through, about 10 minutes, making sure to break it up as it cooks. 
  4. Add your spices and mix. 
  5. Next, add the tomatoes and potatoes and combine. Lower to medium low heat, cover and simmer for about 20 minutes or until the potatoes are fork tender. 
  6. Add the chilis, if using, and cilantro. Stir. 
  7. Optionally, add frozen peas and cook for about 5 minutes. 
  8. Serve alongside basmati rice and naan and enjoy! 

Ingredients 

  • 1 lb ground beef or lamb 
  • 2-3 potatoes, cut into 1-inch cubes 
  • 2-3 medium tomatoes, diced 
  • 1 large onion, diced 
  • 1 tbsp ginger paste
  • 1-2 tbsp minced garlic
  • Cilantro, minced 
  • Green chiles, sliced (optional for added spice)
  • Frozen peas (optional) 
  • Garam masala
  • Ground turmeric  
  • Ground coriander 
  • Ground cumin 
  • Red chili powder 
  • Salt and pepper, to taste 
  • Neutral oil, to cook
