Hudson County Post-Game: Kearny Seeking Volunteer Coaches, Kids And Adults Can Still Get Active In West New York, Guttenberg And Jersey City

Fearing the summer’s over and there won’t be many fun outdoor activities? Don’t worry, here’s how the county is keeping you moving.

Try Out For The Memorial High School Boys’ Soccer Team

Memorial High School, located in West New York, is hosting try outs for the 2025 season. 

Tryouts will take place from now until Monday, Aug. 18. The roster will be posted on Tuesday, Aug. 19.

In 2023, the boys’ team saw much success thanks to the leadership of Coach Dominique Ocello who helped bring the boys to a higher division than ever before.

In March, Memorial announced that senior captain Emilson Erazo traveled to Italy to play in the Viareggio World Football Tournament with NY United Youth Soccer Stars.

Kearny Calling For Volunteer Coaches For Rec Programs

Kearny has a number of recreation programs available to its residents, but the town’s recreation department needs help finding some mentors.

According to their website, they’re in “constant need” of volunteer coaches and are asking for consideration in volunteering in any of their programs. For a full list, you can check it out here: https://www.kearnynj.org/recreation-department/.

All coaches/volunteers are required to submit to a FBI fingerprint and written NJ State Police background check.

Office hours are Monday through Friday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Registrations can be submitted to the Department of Recreation office at Town Hall, located at 402 Kearny Avenue or online at https://register.communitypass.net/townofkearny.

The Kearny Recreation Board of Commission meets on every third Wednesday of each month in the Town Council Chambers at 7 p.m.

Score A Touchdown In This Kearny Football League 

Fall sports are coming back around.

The Kearny Generals are looking for boys and girls in second to sixth grade to join their football team, according to a Facebook post by Pamela Gomes. 

You can register at Kearny’s recreation department, located at Town Hall Park at 402 Kearny Avenue. It’s open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Hey Busy Parents, Here’s An After-School Sports Club For Your Child

Primetime Sports is introducing their after-school club that begins on Sept. 8. Primetime Sports is a New Jersey 501(c)(3) nonprofit “dedicated to supporting youth through sports, mentorship and community.”

They will be opening their doors to all students from kindergarten to eighth grade looking for a fun, safe and laid-back place to hang after school while also staying active!

The program runs weekdays from 2:45 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at 39 Fairmount Avenue in Jersey City. The cost of the program is $250 per month. 

Some of the after school highlights include:

  • Light sports & movement
  • Chill zone with friends
  • Healthy snacks & water
  • Positive mentors

Check Out Guttenberg’s Adult Recreation Program

Summer is almost over but that doesn’t mean you can’t have some more fun and stay active! 

Guttenberg’s Recreation Adult Program is still providing you with some activities for the month.

On Mondays, there will be pickleball from 5 p.m. to 7:45 p.m.

On Tuesdays, participants will have some more options including:

  • Pickleball from 5 p.m. to 7:45 p.m.
  • Cricket from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.
  • Yoga from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m.

On Wednesdays, there will be pickleball from 5 p.m. to 7:45 p.m.

On Thursdays, more options return with:

  • Pickleball from 5 p.m. to 7:45 p.m.
  • Cricket from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.
  • Zumba from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m.

The week wraps up with Saturday’s activity, which is cricket, taking place from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. at Sabello Field, located within Braddock Park.
