Former Christ Hospital Building Stopped From Becoming Residential Development
As the Jersey City Heights community, and beyond, continues to mourn the impending closure of the Heights University Hospital, the city council voted 8-0–with one abstaining—to adopt an ordinance that prevents the property from being developed into “senior housing and assisted living residences,” according to Jackie Roman of NJ.com.
“Passing this ordinance makes it clear that they can’t build luxury-only housing, that anything that would come in the future would have to be negotiated with the city, and we will guarantee and make sure that there’s real acute care that is on that site,” said Mayor-elect James Solomon during Wednesday’s livestreamed meeting at City Hall.
The ordinance became more of a priority following the hospital’s owner, Hudson Regional Hospital, announced that the facility will be closing after serving the community, and beyond, for more than 150 years due to financial shortcomings.
Departments have slowly been dissolving, and soon it will only operate with a “standalone emergency department and provide other health services out of its auxiliary building.” All other areas will reportedly be shutdown.
“This body has a duty to ensure sufficient health care services for the residents of Jersey City, which must take priority here,” Solomon added.

This Jersey City High School Wants To Honor Their Late Coach
University Academic Charter High School in Jersey City is pushing to make Coach C Day a reality.
Clarence “Coach C” Collins, who passed away on July 30, 2024 is being honored by dozens of students and Senator Angela McKnight.

The New Jersey senator has proposed a state resolution that, if passed, would declare July 30 as “Clarence ‘Coach C’ Collins Day.”
“Coach C was a beloved member of the Jersey City community whose extraordinary gift for working with young people touched every corner of our city. During his years of mentorship at University Academy Charter High School and through the Department of Recreation, he guided students onto positive paths, instilled confidence, and created opportunities that changed lives,” McKnight said in a statement.
Collins was loved as a father and mentor in Jersey City. He worked at University Academy Charter High School and within the Department of Recreation.
If passed, the bill, SJR-143, would formally recognize his contributions each year and encourage communities across the state to honor his commitment to service, mentorship and unity, which would keep his legacy alive.
Soon, You Can Commute Smoothly From Secaucus To Jersey City
NJ Transit is one step closer to advancing the extension of the Secaucus-Meadowlands Transitway. This will provide public transit between the Meadowlands Sports and Entertainment Complex, Secaucus Junction and Jersey City when finished.

Last week the NJ Transit Board of Directors approved a budget of $22.2 million, plus 10% for contingencies, to complete “the engineering and design work” that would connect Secaucus Junction and Jersey City.
With the FIFA World Cup coming to New Jersey next summer, phase 1 of the project will increase capacity and be more accessible to events at MetLife Stadium.
