There’s different ways to connect and lend a hand in Hudson County. You can read all about it in this week’s news roundup.
Make A Handmade Card For A Senior
The Jersey City Moms community is collecting Valentine’s Cards for Seniors! You can create handmade cards filled with love and kindness. All ages are welcome to participate.
You can participate by creating a Valentine’s card and dropping it off at Jam Cakery Events located at 326 5th Street in Jersey City until tomorrow, Feb. 10.
If you go after store hours, you can leave them in the little black mailbox on the porch. All cards will be delivered to local seniors in Jersey City.
If you include a separate note with your child’s name, age, and contact number, you will be entered into a special Valentine’s gift giveaway. The winner will be contacted on Feb. 12.

Help Support These Jersey City Families After Apartment Fire Left Them With ‘Absolutely Nothing’
A fire broke out on Palisades Avenue in Jersey City on Jan. 30 and donations continue to be helpful for those who were affected.
A GoFundMe, created by Briana Roman, asks for donations for her aunt, her boyfriend and two sons who were one of the families that lost everything from the incident.
“My aunt, her boyfriend, and her two sons aged 16 and 11-one of them being my godson-were awakened by the sound of fire alarms blaring through their apartment building. They lived on the fourth floor, which unfortunately took the hardest hit. By the grace of God, they all made it out safely,” Roman wrote.
Roman is kindly asking for any donations, no matter what size, to help her aunt out during this tough time.
You can access the GoFundMe here.

Additionally, some Heights community members are stepping in to help the families recover. Choc O Pain, a local bakery located at 330-332 Palisades Avenue, is accepting clothing and essential donations to help the families.
The bakery is also donating 10% of all chocolate cake sales for the next two weeks to help those impacted. For more information, you can click here.

The testing will require “partial service suspensions,” which are mandated by the Federal Railroad Administration.
The “weekend outages” will be:

- March 20 to March 23
- March 27 to March 30 and April 24 to April 27

This Local Is Running For Hudson County Commissioner
Ron Bautista is a longtime community advocate for safe streets and tenants’ rights. On Jan. 26, he announced his run to become the next Hudson County Commissioner.
When he was 12 years old, Bautista came to Hoboken where he spent 11 years as an undocumented immigrant. His family fled Ecuador after political corruption and fraud forced the fall of the country’s economy.
“Once I got my green card, it was my green light to be an advocate, to stand up for the issues that I believe in, and to fight for real change,” Bautista said in a press release statement. “But we shouldn’t have to organize and fight back every single time. The county government has real power and we deserve so much more from it.”

He looks to build on the recent wave of progressive wins in Hudson County.
“My father taught me to ask three questions about any policy or politician: Does it make sense? Does it bring out the best in people? Does it make things fair?” he added. “When I look at our county government right now and ask those questions, it fails on every measure. I’m running to change that.”
