Hudson County Hosts Its Own Combine For Kids Who Want To Be Active
This past week Hudson County Executive Craig Guy rang in the success of the Sports in Education Pilot Program with a combine that was sponsored by the county and partnered by Prime Athletic Development located in Bayonne and the New York/New Jersey-based Champ Up Academy, with support from the New York Red Bulls Academy.
The Sports in Education Program is a grant-funded program that was started by the county a year ago and aims to fix the gap between all Hudson County team sports, youth leagues, private sports programs and clinics.
The program will teach the youth the fundamentals of leadership, planning facilitation and sports essentials.

The celebratory combine was held at County Prep High School and had over 250 student athletes participating from seven schools throughout the county. The schools included:
- Horace Mann Community School
- Henry E. Harris Community School
- Cordero Community School
- Chaplain Charles Watters School
- Hudson Arts & Science Charter School
- Lincoln School
- Weehawken Elementary School
“Director Gina Hulings recognized the gap in sports education within Hudson County schools for kids who want to become active in sports but who are not involved in organized teams and leagues. We sought to fill this gap through the Sports in Education Pilot Program, and what a success it has been,” said Guy. “As County Executive, I am proud to support the development of our youth, and I look forward to seeing the positive impact the program will have on students as it grows.”
Hulings, the Director of Cultural & Heritage Affairs also spoke about the event.
“After seeing the success of our Arts in Education program throughout Hudson County, we realized the need for sports education,” Hulings said.
“We wanted to make sure we met the needs of the students throughout the county, which included wellness training and nutrition development. We were so thrilled to run this pilot program, and we are looking forward to continuing our efforts in the fall.”
Guy also announced that the application for the 2025-2026 Sports in Education program, which will fund programming during and after school hours, will be open to public schools, public school districts and charter schools until May 12.

Harrison Softball Looks To Turn Around Its Season Despite Young Roster
The Harrison High school softball team is still adjusting to the fast paced varsity softball competition in the NJIC National Division.
The Harrison Blue Tides started the season off strong with a statement 15-8 win over Manchester Regional. Following their win, they went onto drop six games in a row, leaving them with a 1-6 record.
“The whole team is pretty much new to varsity, with the exception of my two returners (Rebecca Sardinha and Breaghan Toal) I had come back,” said head coach Keith Mair. “Other than that, they’re all new and they all understand that they have to step up and play their role if we want to be successful.”
Sardinha is a senior three-year starter and goes into her second season as the Blue Tide’s third baseman and leadoff hitter. She has hit .314 with 35 runs and 39 stolen bases over the last two seasons.
Junior Toal is moving over to shortstop from second base and plans to hit either second or third in the lineup. As a sophomore, she hit .288 with 17 runs and 15 stolen bases.
Mair talked about how the team’s fared with the rest of the roster being new.
“It makes things easier because a lot of balls are hitting that side of the field and they know exactly what they’re doing with the ball,” said Mair. “They call out, let the girls know who’s going where. In practice, they’re telling them who’s got cut off, who’s got backup. They’re just helping lead the team.”

Junior center fielder Imani Colon, a transfer from Lyndhurst, joins Sardinha and Toal at the top. Colon had an RBI in the opening win and seems to have the potential and momentum to be an impactful player for the Blue Tide.
Sophomore first baseman Kasandra Rodriguez went 2-for-2 with two walks, had a hit by pitch, two runs, an RBI and five stolen bases.
Sophomore Daniella Gutierrez went 3-for-3 with a walk, four RBI and two runs scored in the home opener. Meanwhile, senior pitcher Ally Carbajal will move into a starting pitcher role with Kassandra Rodriguez and Gutierrez being potential options.
Harrison looks to pick up their season and get the ball rolling Monday at St. Mary in Rutherford.
