Lifeguard Charged With Lying To Police In Bayonne Drowning Investigation

A 37-year-old woman from Toms River has been charged with lying to authorities in an investigation into the drowning of two brothers in a Bayonne pool in 2022.

Ashley Danback was arrested last week and charged with one count of false swearing in connection with statements she made during the investigation into the deaths of Chu Ming Zheng, 19, and Jack Jiang, 16, according to the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office.

Both brothers died after they were pulled from the Lincoln Community School pool on June 8, 2022.

Danback was one of three lifeguards who were working at the pool, according to a mediation statement in a lawsuit filed by the boys’ family via the Hudson County View.

The brothers were reportedly learning how to swim in a 4-foot-deep—out of 13-foot-deep—area of the pool. They ended up in the deep end and drowned.

The lifeguards told investigators that they were in the pool area at the time the two brothers were drowning and needed to be rescued. However, surveillance video showed Danback was in the lobby on the phone and did not rush back, the mediation statement says.

Danback was charged on a summons and was released, the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office stated.
