Hudson County Post-Game: Harrison High School Basketball Player Reaches 1,000 Points, Kearny Needs More Recreation Coaches

Hudson County’s winter sports are heading into the tailend of their seasons, but with much more to expect. 

Here’s this week’s Hudson County sports news roundup.

Jersey City Has A New Co-Ed Adult Sports League

Volo is bringing a number of sports for adults to the Jersey City Heights.

They will be hosting their leagues at St. Nicholas School, located at 118 Ferry Street.

They will soon be starting soccer every Tuesday and pickleball every Wednesday and Thursday. Pickup games that are available to play now are basketball every Tuesday and Thursday and pickleball every Wednesday.

Saint Peter’s Men’s Basketball Is A Conference Top-Seed 

The Saint Peter’s Peacocks have been marching throughout this season and are currently No. 3 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC), sitting behind No. 2 Siena and No. 1 Merrimack.

The Peacocks fell to Rider 81-78 in the closing seconds of their Sunday, Feb 1 game. Redshirt senior guard Brent Bland led the team with 20 points along with redshirt sophomore forward Lucas Scroggins and redshirt sophomore guard Bryce Eaton pitching in with a double-double and 15 points, respectively.

On Friday, Jan. 30, SPU came out on top 66-58 against Mount St. Mary’s Mountaineers in front of the largest home crowd since Nov. 7, 2022 at home in the Run Baby Run Arena, marking  the Peacocks’ eighth straight win at home.

Bland had 17 points and knocked down five three-pointers. Eaton and redshirt sophomore forward Shaedon Simpson came off the bench and helped deliver the victory. Eaton recorded 10 points, six rebounds and six assists. While Simpson had seven points and four rebounds.

Saint Peter’s ability to force turnovers was one of the factors that led them to victory. The Peacocks had a total of 21 points off turnovers while Mount St. Mary recorded just six.

Their next game will be away against Manhattan on Thursday, Feb. 5 at 7 p.m.

Kearny Is Looking For Recreation Coaches

The town of Kearny is in search of a Recreation Crew coach for the spring and summer season.

Harrison High School Student Reaches 1,000 Point Milestone

Harrison High School junior guard Angel Castellano has officially reached 1,000 career points in just three seasons, according to a Facebook post by the Harrison Team on Facebook.

“With hard work, determination and heart, Angel reaches a milestone that only a few get to achieve,” Harrison Team wrote.

The Blue Tide currently sit at 4-10 for the season. They look to bounce back in the month of February as the season is in its final stretch with just five games left.

Castellano looks to add more points to his career tally as he and the Blue Tide take the court next at home Monday, Feb. 2 against Palisades Park.
