Jersey City Names September As Nepal Heritage Month
The Jersey City City Council recently unanimously voted for designating September as Nepal Heritage Month, a resolution that was sponsored by Councilmembers Tom Zuppa and Rolando Lavarro.
“We saw the terrible flooding going on in Nepal due to global warming and economic environmental changes,” Zuppa said, according to TAPinto. “Our city has to come together in good times and in bad. This is one of the good times where we honor September as Nepal Heritage Month here in Jersey City.”
Nepal has a number of celebrations and festivals that go on throughout the year, but the exact dates may change depending on Nepal’s lunar calendar. Generally, two of their biggest festivals fall between September and October, which are Dashain, or Bijaya Dashami, and Tihar, or Festival of Lights.
Jersey City City Council Announces 102 ‘Affordable’ Homes Coming
The municipal council gave final approval to the financial agreement for the Canal Crossing Project.
This clears the way for over 500 new homes in Bergen-Lafayette, including 102 “truly” affordable homes with some rents of $1,000 and under, a press release from the city read.
The press release added that this project is the “first housing agreement that was fully negotiated under Mayor James Solomon’s ‘Building for Working Families’ agenda.”
“Jersey City residents fought for decades to reclaim this land, and tonight we delivered on their promise,” said Solomon in a statement.
“Canal Crossing is what it looks like when development works for the people who live here: affordable homes for families, good union jobs and a brand-new park, all built on land that sat empty for generations. This is how we build a Jersey City working people can afford to stay in.”

“We went into this negotiation with one question: what do the working people of Jersey City get in return? The answer is over 100 affordable homes, union jobs, a new park and greenway that the developer is now paying, and tax revenue worth 13 times more than the property is
currently generating,” said Deputy Mayor Keshav Podda.

Novado Gallery’s Powerhouse Art Exhibition is opening on Dec. 12 and they are now accepting submissions.
The Powerhouse: Past, Present, and Future invites artists to submit artwork that is inspired by the historic Hudson & Manhattan Railroad Powerhouse in downtown Jersey City and “the evolving cultural landscape of JC’s Powerhouse Arts District.”

This Jersey City Sandwich Shop Is Temporarily Closed
Subculture, a sandwich shop in Downtown Jersey City, announced that its location had to temporarily close after the building owner and Jersey City officials “deemed unsafe due to structural issues.”
The shop, located at 260 Newark Avenue, had to also vacate its other tenants while “necessary repairs have been completed.”
Subculture wrote in their Instagram post that they are still open for catering orders at normal capacity at subculturejc.com, EZCater and CaterCow.
“This is now the second business I have heard of that was temporarily forced to closed because landlords aren’t properly maintaining buildings. So sorry yall are dealing with this ,” @thehairroomjerseycity wrote on the post.
